How to turn off Word’s built-in checker when using LanguageTool

Updated this week

If you're using LanguageTool for Windows with Microsoft Word, you might notice that Word's built-in spelling and grammar checker shows suggestions at the same time. This can be distracting or lead to conflicting feedback.

To get the most out of LanguageTool, we recommend turning off Word’s native checker. Here's how you can do that:

  1. Open Microsoft Word

  2. Click on File in the top left corner

  3. Select Options from the menu

  4. In the Word options window, click Proofing

  5. Under the section "When correcting spelling and grammar in Word", uncheck the following boxes:

    • Check spelling as you type

    • Mark grammar errors as you type

    • Frequently confused words

    • Check grammar with spelling

  6. Click OK to save your changes

Once these settings are turned off, only LanguageTool’s suggestions will appear—giving you a more focused and consistent editing experience.
