Our automatic speech recognition is generally reliable, but there may be situations where it doesn’t perform as expected.
For short texts (up to 50 characters), LanguageTool limits language detection to those:
commonly spoken in your country, and
saved in your browser settings.
To improve accuracy, you can manually add more languages via the add-on settings.
Here’s how:
Open the add-on
Click the "LT" icon in your browser toolbar.
💡 Tip: If you don't see it, it might be hidden behind a puzzle (jigsaw) icon—click it to find LanguageTool. Then click the gear icon in the bottom-left corner to open the settings.
Navigate to language settings
In the settings menu, go to “Language options.”Set your preferred languages
From here, you can add or remove the languages you want LanguageTool to detect and use.
LanguageTool does not correct or detect my text in a different language than the main text
LanguageTool can only check one language at a time. If your text contains multiple languages, it will automatically focus on the dominant language - the one used most frequently in the text.
For example, if you write a text that mixes English and German, and English is used more often, only English will be checked.
To check the other language (e.g., German), you’ll need to manually switch the selected language in the LanguageTool settings.
💡 Tip: For the best results, check texts written in multiple languages one section at a time, selecting the correct language for each part.
